Keys To Saving: Hey, You Can’t Freeze A Banana, Can You?

I don’t eat fruit, a leftover habit from my Atkins Diet days. My Wife likes bananas, but Alex doesn’t list the monkey food high on her list of favorite fruits. I once purchased some marked down bananas, and prepared banana nut bread with them, but I was the only one that ate it. So the next time I can pick up a deal on bananas, should I pass?

If you have read my Keys To Saving, you know I try to avoid throwing away food. So can you freeze a banana? Yes you can.

Here’s how:

To freeze a banana in its peel, place it in a Ziploc bag, then place the bag in a safe, protected area of the freezer where they won’t get crushed. The peel will turn black, but the fruit inside should be fine.

You can also slice a peeled banana, sprinkle lightly with lemon juice, and freeze that way. This is the easy way to have them ready to use for smoothies. Freeze each slice between a sheet of wax paper, to make them easier to separate later. Plop the still frozen slice into your blender when you need one.

To make banana pops, peel the banana, and slice the banana in half (not sides, but in half top & bottom). Slide a popsicle stick slowly into the cut side of the banana, until half way inserted. Wrap in wax paper, then place in a Ziploc bag.

  1. I freeze my bananas that I use in my protein shakes. I started freezing them in the peel but they are impossible to peel frozen & they are extremely mushy when thawed. I just put them in a baggie, peeled. When I want to use them, I let it thaw for a few minutes & then just slice them up & throw them in. It’s very simple & I always have them on hand : )

  2. & a money saving tip.. I re-use them. I put the baggie back in the freezer when I use the banana & just keep filling the same ones

  3. TIP: 3 whole large bananas is usually just enough for one loaf of banana bread. Yum.!
    I always peel banana and take the brown spots off and throw them in a zip loc bag or even the (large) zip loc tub with cover.
    Never throw out dark bananas. Peel ’em, toss ’em in a baggie, throw em in the freezer for breads, shakes, frozen dipped chocolate pops.
    (depends on which “diet” your on)
