Have you seen the price of walnuts lately? They must be filled with oil or something. Actually, they do contain oil, and after time, the oil can turn rancid. Rancid isn’t good.
Keeping walnuts (or most other nuts) in the pantry, will be fine if they are kept cool. Once the weather turns warmer, shelled nuts will only stay fresh for 2-4 weeks in the pantry. So what can you do if you buy nuts in bulk? You can’t freeze nuts, can you?
Yes, you can. Most nuts can be kept in the freezer for at least a year. Place nuts in a Ziploc bag, removing all excess air in the bag. Label and date your bag before placing it in the freezer.
And the best part is, there is no need to defrost them, unless you are eating them alone (the nuts, not you). If you want to”wake them up from their slumber”, roast them for a few minutes on the stove. Otherwise, add them to a recipe straight from the freezer.
