My Dad sent me this last year, I’m reposting it again.

Scout and another unknown dog lie among the rubble at Ground Zero, just two of nearly 100 search and rescue animals who helped to search for survivors

During the chaos of the 9/11 attacks, where almost 3,000 people died, nearly 100 loyal search and rescue dogs and their brave owners scoured Ground Zero for survivors.

Merlyn and his handler Matt Claussen were deployed to Ground Zero on September 24, working the night shift for five days

Now, ten years on, just 12 of these heroic canines survive, and they have been commemorated in a touching series of portraits entitled ‘Retrieved’.

The dogs worked tirelessly to search for anyone trapped alive in the rubble, along with countless emergency service workers and members of the public.

Bretagne and his owner Denise Corliss from Cypress, Texas, arrived at the site in New York on September 17, remaining there for ten days

Traveling across nine states in the U.S. from Texas to Maryland, Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas, 34, captured the remaining dogs in their twilight years in their homes where they still live with their handlers, a full decade on from 9/11.

Handler Julie Noyes and Hoke were deployed to the World Trade Center from their home in Denver on September 24 and searched for five days

Their stories have now been compiled in a book, called Retrieved, which is published on Friday, the tenth anniversary of the attacks.

Noted for her touching portraits of animals, especially dogs, Charlotte wanted ‘Retrieved’ to mark not only the anniversary of the September 2001 attacks, but also as recognition for some of the first responders and their dogs.

Kaiser, 12, pictured at home in Indianapolis, Indiana, was deployed to the World Trade Center on September 11 and searched tirelessly for people in the rubble

‘I felt this was a turning point, especially for the dogs, who although are not forgotten, are not as prominent as the human stories involved,’ explained Charlotte, who splits her time between New York and Amsterdam.

Red, 11, from Annapolis, Maryland, went with Heather Roche to the Pentagon from September 16 until the 27 as part of the Bay Area Recovery Canines

‘They speak to us as a different species and animals are greatly important for our sense of empathy and to put things into perspective.

After 45 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counseling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the years they had been married. On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured.

Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched – with a raised eyebrow. The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, “This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?”

“Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish or play golf.”

A couple made a deal that whoever died first would come back and inform the other if there is sex after death . Their biggest fear was that there was no after life at all .

After a long life together, the husband was the first to die. True to his word, he made the first contact:

” Marion . . . Marion “

“Is that you, Bob?”

“Yes, I’ve come back like we agreed . ““That’s wonderful! What’s it like?”

“Well, I get up in the morning, I have sex . I have breakfast and then it’s off to the golf course .I have sex again, bathe in the warm sun and then have sex a couple of more times .

Then I have lunch (you’d be proud – lots of greens) . Another romp around the golf course, then pretty much have sex the rest of the afternoon . After supper, it’s back to golf course again .

Then it’s more sex until late at night . I catch some much needed sleep and then the next day it starts all over again”

“Oh, Bob are you in Heaven?”

“No, I’m a rabbit in Arizona ”

LOST FILM – Honolulu, Hawaii – August 14, 1945
Great video of a Spontaneous Victory Parade in Honolulu in 1945. Take a look at this video-absolutely fabulous!

Notice the cars, jeeps, and youth. The guys in khaki or gray shirts and black ties are Navy officers or chiefs. The rest are Army or Marine. How young they all were to do what they did.

This guy really captured a moment in history! (You can listen to Jimmy Durante singing “I’ll be Seeing You” in the background, too) This is a super video of a time past – we need to remember and be THANKFUL.

Check out the color fidelity. It’s not bad for 1945. Nothing will ever compare with Kodachrome film.

Fishing Story

I went fishing this morning but after a short time I ran out of worms.

Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait.

Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth

I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.

Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit.

So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth.

His eyes rolled back, he went limp.

I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog.

A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot.

It was the snake…………with two more frogs.

Life is good in the South.

I just received my tax return for 2011 back from the IRS. It puzzles me!!! They are questioning how many dependents I claimed. I guess it was because of my response to the question: “List all dependents?” I replied: 12 million illegal immigrants; 3 million crack heads; 42 million unemployed people on food stamps, 2 million people in over 243 prisons; Half of Mexico; and 535 persons in the U.S. House and Senate.” Evidently this was NOT an acceptable answer.

I KEEP ASKING MYSELF, WHO DID I MISS?

Here’s a truly heartwarming story about the bond formed between a little
5-year-old girl and some construction workers that will make you believe
that we all can make a difference when we give a child the gift of our
time… 5-Year-Old’s First Job .

A young family moved into their new home, which was next to a vacant lot.
One day, a construction crew turned up to start building a house on the
empty lot.

The young family’s 5-year-old daughter naturally took an interest in
all the activity going on next door and spent much of
each day observing the workers.

Eventually the construction crew, all of them “gems-in-the-rough,” more or
less, adopted her as a kind of project mascot.
They chatted with her, let her sit with them while they
had coffee and lunch breaks and gave her little jobs to
do here and there to make her feel important.

At the end of the first week, they even presented her with a pay envelope
containing $10. The little girl took this home to her mother who
suggested that she take her “pay” to the bank the next day to start a
savings account. When the girl and her mom got to the bank, the teller was
equally impressed and asked the little girl how she had come by her very own
pay check at such a young age. The little girl proudly replied, “I worked
last week with a real construction crew building the new house next door to
us.”

“Oh my goodness gracious,” said the teller, “and will you be working on the
house again this week, too?”

The little girl replied, “I will, if those a**holes at Lowe’s ever deliver
the damn sheet rock.”

Kind of brings a tear to the eye – doesn’t it?
