Google wants to help 10,000 homeowners go solar, announcing this week that it has set up a $75 million fund with Clean Power Finance, a company that provides financing options for residential solar systems.
How will the Google fund work? Google will maintain ownership of the installed solar array, and Clean Power Finance and the solar installers are responsible for maintenance of the solar panels.
Homeowners pay a monthly fee for the system, essentially renting the solar panels from Google. The monthly payment will often cost less than local utility rates, writes Google’s Director of Green Business Operations Rick Needham on the company’s blog.
Google thinks that Clean Power Finance’s model – eliminating the initial cost of solar panels for homeowners by bringing together investors and solar installers – can accelerate the widespread adoption of residential solar systems across the country.
“Purchasing a solar system is a major home improvement, but the upfront cost has historically been one of the biggest barriers for homeowners,” Needham says. “Solar installers across the country don’t always have the resources to find financing for customers or the capital to provide it themselves. And for investors like Google, banks and others, it can be difficult to enter a fragmented solar market with many companies and get connected to individual homeowners. That’s where Clean Power Finance comes in.”
Earlier this year, Google created a $280 million fund with solar installer SolarCity to finance residential solar installations. The tech giant estimates that its investments in SolarCity and Clean Power Finance will allow up to 10,000 homeowners to install solar arrays, Needham says.

Fair trade refers to a system of buying and selling goods in a way that workers, farmers and communities are paid a fair wage. Fair trade requirements also prohibit child labor and ensure that small farmers are guaranteed a minimum price for their goods. Just because a coffee isn’t labeled “fair trade” doesn’t necessarily mean coffee-growers were treated poorly. But reaching for a fair trade item is a good way to be sure your dollars are going towards coffee with a conscience.
Fair trade and organic coffees used to be sold mostly online and in specialty stores, but more and more conventional retailers are carrying these products. Check out the coffee aisle at your local grocery store for organic and fair trade options. Not all fair trade coffees are organic, but it’s usually pretty easy to find a coffee that’s both.

Unplug When Not In Use
You may think that just because your computer is turned off it is not using any power. Many people assume this and unfortunately they are wrong. Even when the off button is hit, there is still power going into the machine if it is still hooked to the power outlet. A phone left charging is still using power as is other appliances such as a radio that is left plugged in. The best practice is, if it is cut off go ahead and unplug it. If you unplug it there is no way that power could be going into that machine and being wasted. So remember unplug anything you are not using.
Turn Off the Lights
Leaving multiple lights on in your home can cause your power bill to sky rocket. If you are not in a room, cut the light off. Do not leave lights on overnight as they will just increase your power bill. If you must leave lights on in certain rooms or have a night light, try and find energy saving light bulbs or even a solar powered light that can be turned on at night. This will help to decrease your power bill.
Heating and Cooling System
When your heating and cooling system runs it uses extreme amounts of power.
