So, What’s Cookin? I hear that a lot at my house. I love to cook, and even more than that, love to cook for my family. The three of us eat very differently, which can be challenging.
My Wife Alina is Cuban, so she craves rice, beans and bread. Not sometimes, or even usually. Like Spike Lee said “Girl’s Gotta Have It”
My Daughter Alex craves pasta. After she eats pasta, she tops it off with more pasta. She doesn’t really care what kind of pasta, just as long as it’s pasta. And cheese.
I don’t eat rice, beans, bread or pasta very often. If ever. I eat meat (or chicken, seafood, etc), and veggies. I am the experimenter in the house. Cow tongue? Been there many times. Snails? Got some in the freezer now. Frog legs have slid down my gullet many times. There isn’t a veggie I won’t try, and I enjoy most (not asparagus though).
So what do I cook? Well, rice and beans and pasta and bread. Then I add in the good stuff. I buy smart, only at the right price, and that allows us to eat well. Probably very well by most standards. I’m not a chef, so my recipes aren’t tough. I usually Google the main ingredient I have, and find a recipe that way. Then I adapt it to my family. There are no carrots or celery in my house, because my girls wont eat them. So I adapt. In the meantime, I have 47 boxes of pasta in my pantry, and I buy rice 25 pounds at a time.
One other thing I failed to mention was that Alex and I are chocoholics. If I ever bake something that isn’t chocolate, the event is celebrated by the non-chocoholic in the house.
